Many years later, in his classic work 'Preaching and Preachers', he argued strongly that men should never enter the pulpit as a profession. Rather, they should only do so if they felt unable to do anything else and had been compelled by God's call into it. It helped, of course, if a man had natural talents as well --- for example, a good speaking manner, a clear mind (though not, he would argue, necessarily an academic one) and above all, a fine character. But the main criterion was that such a man should be anointed by God for the task; someone filled with the Spirit, and with the passionate concern for the spiritually lost, and a deep concern for God's people. Such people did not call themselves --- he rejected any such idea. Rather, they were men recognized by the church as being called by God. Preachers, he always said, were born and not made.
